With its summer cottages the size of palaces and its century-old status as a yachting capital, Newport is the quintessential playground of American aristocracy.

Newport’s rocky coastline and sandy beaches became known as America’s First Resort during the 1870-1900 Gilded Age. Today, 11 properties and landscapes, seven of which are National Historic Landmarks, are open for tours. The Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path running from Memorial Boulevard to Ocean Drive, includes breathtaking ocean vistas and glimpses of Newport mansions on Bellevue Avenue.

Home to yachting’s prestigious America’s Cup and U.S. Naval Station Newport, the city is also known as the Sailing Capital of the World.  Sit back and enjoy the view while “Sight-Sailing” around Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay or hop aboard a former rum-smuggling yacht for an narrated tour of the rich history and legends of this amazing seaport. Or, if you would prefer to learn to sail, several individualized or group programs are readily available. For a different perspective, rent a kayak and explore the endless locations  on the Narragansett Bay 40 mile coastline.

Take a tour of the Gilded Age mansions that were once summer homes of Astors, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts, or peruse the Newport art galleries diverse collections of local, national and international talent. There is never a shortage of activities ranging from art, film and dance to fishing, biking, sailing, vineyards, golf, beaches, state parks, scenic walks, and cruises. Make the most of your escape by indulging in shopping the one-of-a-kind boutiques or savor mouthwatering finds at a number of diverse restaurants. Come visit the City by the Sea.
